Chapter Seven: Saving the beauty
Save her, save the beauty who’s barely breathing
Don’t let death come for her reaping her life
Her soul looked happy, she looked so bright
She was even brighter than a moon light
Don’t let her soul get out of sight and
She seemed to have tried with her might
Beware of darkness, it could be seeping
Through the darkness of your painful soul
Don’t let the darkness cover her shimmering eyes,
Seek salvation and refuge in her sensitive heart
Many hours had passed; Adeline woke up from her murky deep darkness to feel a sensation of a cold cloth that dabbed her right at her forehead. In that instance, Adeline was able to hear head pounding heavily just like a heavy rod hitting a rock. Confusion blurred her vision and flooded her startled mind. She didn’t know where she was or even if it was day or night. Adeline fought hard to lift her eyelids and look around her to figure out where she was exactly. It took her a huge effort to do so and at last, she fluttered her eyes and opened them slowly to see that a man was looking straight into her eyes.
He had straight arranged light brown hair, which looked smooth to the touch. His eyes looked like a transparent ocean crystal blue eyes. His face was thin, but looked strong and well - defined, his features appeared as if they were molded from pure granite. He had light brow eye brows, which sloped smoothly down in quite a serious expression. He was looking straight into Adeline’s eyes and smiling beautifully a wide smile that drew into a line across his clear face. His lips looked perfect.
It was clear to her that he was from Northumberland; he was dressed in a knight’s clothes while she spotted the sword that he was carrying. He resembled the man she saw earlier, but the way he was dressed was completely different, that one was almost naked while the one who standing in front of her wore Knights clothes. Adeline tried to speak; there were many questions she wanted to find answers to including her current location, but she couldn’t seem to be able to utter any words to ask where she was. Everything looked hazy for Adeline to understand and she thought, for a second, that she was back to her land, the walls looked the same, everything looked familiar even the smell.
“How are you feeling, lass?” The man inquired.
“I’m not sure, but I’ll live I guess, but who are you?” Adeline inquired anxiously; her eyes were looking around seeking Frayne.
“That is a relief, I thought you weren’t going to make it, I’m Kyle, Frayne’s younger brother,” The man replied.
No wonder he was extremely attractive, Adeline thought, pausing for a second before she continued.
“But where I am now? And where is Frayne? He was the one who saved me?” Adeline inquired again; feeling her head with her palm.
Kyle dipped the cold cloth into a basin that was placed not far from the bed and squeezed it strongly. Adeline listened cautiously to the sound of water that was dripping out slowly out of the cloth. Adeline blinked at Frayne looking completely helpless and lost in thoughts.
In that instance, Adeline heard a loud clang of metal that made her feel unease and surprised her waking her up into a state of unusual awareness; for some seconds, she started to doubt when the she heard loud sounds of iron bar lifting on an iron door.
“What is this sound, please tell me where I am and where is that man, are you locking me here?” Adeline insisted that time with such a growing fear and panic, she was still on the bed, but she kept glancing around her and admiring the contents of the room. It was a tiny room that was a little bit furnished but that didn’t have any windows or it appeared that those windows were newly broken. The smell of fire and smokes swept the entire place. While there were many candles that were burning on a golden candelabra that was placed by the side of the bed. The walls were made of stones. The man stood immediately and walked towards the window, but he didn’t utter any word and his face grew paler whenever Adeline mentioned Frayne’s name. It was then when she decided to stand up and to try to go out; she was still feeling dizzy when she stood up and walked heavily towards the door while Kyle was busy looking from the window. When she sneaked on her tiptoes and was about to reach the doorknob with her fingers, the wooden door swung wide open and another man entered, he strode heavy and looked purposeful. He had thick, long hair as he glared at Adeline with a kind of threatening glance.
“Going somewhere, my lady?” The man inquired impatiently.
In that instance, Adeline froze in her place while Kyle turned around to see what was going on, the huge door slammed behind the man who had just entered with such a horrific echo of definiteness. The dark man hooked one of his thumbs into a leather sword belt across his wide chest.
“What’s your name, and where do belong, lass?” The man asked angrily.
While Adeline looked still not certain what she had to say or how she would speak, she blinked at the man who just entered and examined his arms and dangerous powerful hands. His face looked familiar to her, it was clear that one was a warrior, there was no doubt; he seemed to be built just like iron, but where could she have seen him, she couldn’t recall.
“I’m still waiting for an answer to the question I have asked you,” That warrior inquired with a lift of an eyebrow. “Have you lost your memory, lass, I haven’t, especially when you raised that stone to strike me with it in the head, lassie.”
At that moment, and all of a sudden, all of the memories rushed back to Adeline, she remembered everything starting from the moment she that Viking warrior found out that she was trying to escape.
Her brother, her father…
Her heart started pounding abruptly, she had to go back and meet her brother; they had already arranged everything to go back to Campbell, she couldn’t apprehend why she was even brought there, she had to leave. Adeline attempted to open the door and leave, but a wave of drowsiness, dizziness hampered her and Kyle, the light – haired man rushed up to hold her before Frayne could do. He urged her back down on the bed and sighed.
“I’m sorry, but you can’t leave right now, you are so weak doing,” Kyle explained.
Adeline could see how Frayne’s eyes conquered her; he had such a sharp glance that made her unable to look anywhere else, but into his face.
“I want an explanation, now, where on earth I am, I really need to leave, my brother must be waiting for me, we made our plan, I filled his place at war and told him to escape from the Earl and meet me in a specific location from which we could go back to Campbell, our homeland, I have waited years to do so, so I need to go and now,” Adeline explained.
Her words seemed to be the first words and the last that was ever spoken.
“You are in the Night Watch Knight’s Castle” Frayne replied in his thunderous voice.
It was then when frustration ran through Adeline’s veins; she knew she was in a trouble, she just hoped that she wasn’t being held as a captive in that Castle, she had already heard many stories about it.
“The Night Watch Knight’s castle, the last I need now, so please, no, tell me it is a joke right? It is a joke, right? …” Please, no. “Am I being held prisoner here? You absolutely possess no right to keep me here.” Adeline complained.
“Aye, we have every right to hold you here,” Frayne replied in an arrogant husky, but low voice, “You belong to Campbell, no, if you are not, just say it,” Frayne questioned.
“Aye, I am from Campbell, but—” Adeline replied hesitatingly.
“There are no buts, lassie, we need you to lead us to your father,” Kyle asked gently while his eyes were hooked to Adeline’ bewildered eyes.
“What is that you want from my father?” Adeline shouted.
“I will tell you on our way,” Frayne said.
Although she didn’t understand anything from what was said, Adeline struggled to think as clearly as she could, but her brain seemed to be still fuzzy, and tangled with the mess she found herself
in. She wished it was a dream and just covered her eyes with her tiny hand as if to escape from the reality. “I didn’t know I had entered your property,” Adeline said.
It had been really cold and humid too. Adeline didn’t have some sleep in many days; she kept dreaming about the day in which she would meet her father and family again.
“Please let us head back home and now, I must go back home,” Adeline begged.
Adeline was still feeling drowsy and couldn’t stand up anymore so she sat down on the bed waiting for that feeling to go away so that could discussing the need to leave. Frayne and Kyle stood by the side of the window, but Frayne seemed to be feeling unwell when the lights stroke his face so he remained in the shade near the window. Adeline pretended that she was asleep, but she seized the opportunity to eavesdropping, she heard them clearly.
“How did you escape from death, I still can’t understand, all the people said they saw you thrown into the fire, how did you survive,” Kyle inquired.
That was the last thing Adeline thought of; why troubles kept chasing her from a place to another; she was stuck with a criminal, she thought when Frayne replied:
“It is a long story, I can’t relate it to you now, but tell me how many of our knights have died, what about Samuel? Where is he? Did they strike you right after my execution?” Frayne inquired anxiously.
“I still can’t believe that I am alive, they have attacked us ferociously, they searched everywhere in the castle seeking the treasure, but they failed in finding it, they started killing everyone they could see, it was horrible, Samuel made it, he will be back after burying the last corpse,” Kyle explained, grief could be seen in his face as he spoke.
His words fell on Adeline’s ears like thunder; she never thought that treasures even existed and it became obvious that she brought herself into the den of the monster. Kyle looked easier from her to convince, so Adeline made her mind to get closer from him maybe, she could escape with his help. Suddenly, the voices of the two men started to fade away as Adeline finally drifted to peaceful sleep.
Few days had passed and Kyle didn’t leave Adeline even for a minute, he was nursing her carefully as if he knew her for ages; she could remember his face whenever she woke up, he would feed her and cover her then stay by her side until she fell to sleep once more. Every time, Adeline felt curious to see that knight who came back from death, but he was nowhere around her, maybe he abandoned her in that dark place and left alone; the idea scared her as he seemed to be the only fearless person who was able to take her back to her land. However, as days went by, Kyle started to get obsessed about her. He would touch her hand while she was asleep, she could feel it. It was then when Adeline started thinking seriously about leaving the entire place and escape by herself; she convinced herself that she didn’t need Frayne’s help anymore and she didn’t want that the brothers would quarrel for her, so she made her mind and yes, one night, when Kyle was sleeping on a chair right by her side, Adeline slid down on her tiptoes, wore her shoes and sneaked out of the room, then sealed it silently from the outside so that Kyle couldn’t follow her. But first, Adeline had to figure out which way she had to go so that she could get out. She moved slowly down the castle dark alleys. Adeline was able to see tiny strips of light around the edges of the thick black curtains. There were many rooms that were all shut, only one room was open a little bit, although it was dark, a low light could be seen coming out from its entrance. Adeline felt curious especially that she heard the brothers talking about a treasure, and she couldn’t prevent herself from penetrating the room. It was getting darker, she stumbled in the way, but she didn’t fall, she looked around her when she heard a low groan from the corner of that room. Fear stopped Adeline in her tracks, but she tried to find out the source of that voice and after some moments, she saw him there on the floor. Adeline bent down to look closer, it was Frayne, but he looked different, weak as if he just awoken, as if he had been sleeping for years; he was repeating just one words “Rose,”. Adeline wondered to whom that name belonged, how it could cause a man to suffer such a pain.
Chapter Eight: Resisting blood needs
When the night fell and I was finally awaken
I realized the light of day that I had forsaken,
I started to see with my Vampire eyes seeking wide
I found out that there was nowhere safe for me to hide
I started looking for my prey calling me upon every rise
I didn’t know your blood I seek until I have met your eyes
When the moonlight grows bright, I grow stronger
It makes me wish that the night becomes much longer
The hunger for your blood claws my soul inside out
The rising need to feed my heart makes my path harder
Finding you here by my side, with your blood that is strong
Here within the fort made of these huge walls like a live prison
Rose; her name would cause Frayne unbearable pain to surge within his heart; the same pain he felt trying to defy the hunger that was killing his senses, he had tried so hard to deny the need of the God of Vampires that was instilled within his soul. Frayne kept trying to deny the will of Aka, although he saved him from perpetual death; he wanted to bury the rising need for blood and pretend that he never died; he didn’t even tell his younger brother Kyle about what really happened,; he just lied saying that he escape in the last minute. Frayne tried hard to bury the killing pain, but his condition became more dangerous than it was as vampires couldn’t consume anything, but blood. Soon, the hunger he felt became undeniable and powerful that; Frayne was scared that aka would visit him as he did every night since he became a vampire; he had been hiding in the same corner for many days and night.
Frayne saw a shadow getting closer from him; he tried to stand up, but felt his limbs became more like lead; the exhaustion he felt of the starvation had its consequences upon Frayne. He leaned against the wall, trying to take a rest, but he stumbled as if he was a drunkards right underneath Adeline’s feet. Hunger consumed him totally; the tiny part of himself that looked still aware of what was happening around him made him realize that Adeline was standing in front of him; she looked exactly like Rose, everything about her. He looked up at Adeline with his drowsy eyes; his long hair looked disarranged as a tiny smear of dark blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. Frayne couldn’t control his tongue as it flicked out involuntarily. For a minute, Frayne thought that he saw two sparkles of fire that were burning in the dark in front of him in the corridor, but he realized that it was nothing. Adeline was watching him as he fell to the ground and crawled; he tried to keep his mind away, but in vain, he was already startled and started to lose focus. Frayne felt ashamed for he was unable to hide, a sudden need to consume Adeline ignited within him. But he repressed the idea in his mind and buried his hunger and pain and tried to splinter sanity. But as he crawled heavily down the ground, he saw that girl kneeling to help him; what brought her in such a time? Frayne wondered? How come she wasn’t afraid of him? Frayne shook his head; he had to kick her out, but he didn’t have the power to do it; he tried to scratch his small claws upon the cold stones of the room, but he couldn’t help himself; he felt paralyzed when Adeline was approaching him and touching his hand to help him stand up. Why did she even come, she didn’t realize what she was facing, Frayne thought, but it was too late; she was there standing in front of him; he was really hungry, but he didn’t want to kill; he only wanted to die, but that seemed to be far from reality; he had already granted his soul to the Vampires God.
Frayne’s long nails scraped on the stones of the cold walls as he tried hard to pull himself and stood straight in the darkness when he yelled:
“Go away, what do you think you are doing here, lassie?” Frayne groaned as he ordered Adeline to leave; but for some reason, she was looking straight into his eyes with her innocent eyes; she didn’t seem to be afraid, how couldn’t she be? Frayne wondered.
“Frayne… Oh,
Frayne… Are you alright?” Adeline’s voice seemed as if it was floating out of the middle of nowhere.
Frayne looked around him, still dazzled, his head felt fuzzy as he tried not to focus on Adeline’s face. The smell of her blood dominated the place and all of a sudden, Frayne felt the presence of another creature in the room, it was the servant of Aka, Gwen, why did she come back again, what did she want? She had been visiting him for a few days; she had to make sure he obeyed the orders of his Vampire god to consume human blood and claim Gwen to be his beloved, but he wouldn’t do that, he had wished he died in the flames of the burning fire before becoming a vampire. If only he knew what was going to become of him, he would have never done that; he would have never offered his soul to Aka, the god of Vampires.
Adeline got closer from Frayne and tried to remove the hair that covered his face, she wanted to make sure he was alright, but right at that moment, Frayne completely lost control and in a blink of an eye, he gave up his struggle and leaned on the girl’s neck, bit it slightly. The latter was shocked unable to move or o anything; the wound he afflicted her wasn’t deep, but it was enough for him to smell her fresh blood bubbling to the surface. He was no longer able to see her as a human being, but he could only see and feel her blood. He held the girl in his powerful arms and lowered his head as he opened his jaw widely; his tongue flicked out to caress the wound, and finally, he tasted her blood, the taste pleased him and he started to bury his head deeper into the girl’s neck when she pushed him harshly on the floor. Only the, did Frayne got back to reality; his eyes opened wide as he looked into Adeline’s frightened eyes.
“I’m so sorry Adeline, I don’t know what happened to me, I didn’t mean to hurt you,” Frayne explained, blood still dripping out of his mouth.
“What are you, Frayne? You are a vampire? But how…” Adeline replied, placing her hand above her wound.
